WEAK JUMP TAKEOUT RESPONSE
A single jump takeout response at the two or three level is a weak
bid over an intervening simple overcall, but only in situations
when it is not a semi-strong jump takeout (see chapter SEMI-STRONG
JUMP TAKEOUT in the book "Conventional Doubles"). For an unpassed
hand, that leaves the following auctions if negative doubles are
applicable:
South West North
1C 1D/1H 2S
1C 1D 2H
1C 1H/1S 3D
1D 1H 2S
1D 1H/1S 3C
1H 1S 3C/3D
1S 2C 3D
Note that in all these auctions, a non-jump bid in the same suit
would be forcing. That leaves the jump available for a preemptive
bid.
For a passed hand, however, all single jump takeouts after an
opposing simple overcall are preemptive--splinter bids excepted.
When negative doubles are not applicable, all new suit bids by an
unpassed hand are forcing and therefore all jump takeouts are
preemptive (again excepting splinter bids).
The requirements for a weak jump takeout are a six-card or longer
suit and no defense. The suit quality will vary somewhat with vul-
nerability and the type of game (e.g., IMP, matchpoints). There is
no point count requirement.
Note that the weak jump takeout does not apply over a weak jump
overcall and does not apply at the four level:
South West North
1C 2D 3H - natural, strong
South West North
1H 3C 4D - splinter bid
South West North
1S 2H 4C/4D - splinter bids
